In anatomy, the prone position is the position where the body is lying down. It is the opposite of lying on the back facing up. Using terms defined in anatomical position, the ventral side is down and the dorsal side is up.
In the case of the forearm, prone refers to a configuration in which the palm is directed backward and the radius and ulna are overlapped.
If you need to be in the prone position for surgery, the medical staff will help you to sleep gently and carefully on your stomach. You will generally be given anesthesia first and any monitors, IVs, or other medical equipment needed will be connected before you are placed in the prone position. There will be support pads to prevent injury to the face, breasts and pelvic area.
